We’ve got a friend, who, like most people, changes his phone once a year. However, unlike most people, he does this not because of the end of a contract, not because he’s had a nice year’s worth of use from the handset and has rationally decided to move onto a slightly newer, slightly sleeker, slightly more full-of-useless-gadgets model like the rest of us do. No, this particular individual seems to go through some kind of urban angst every new year’s eve and hurls his phone out of the window of whatever house party we may be at. Unless it’s a ground floor window, then he’ll most likely just stamp on it.

The first year it was funny. The second funny, but a little weird. Now it’s happened four years on the trot and we’re slightly worried about him. But luckily, in the shape of the Nokia 3720 Classic, we have the perfect Christmas present for him this year. Because as the video below proves, this phone is about as indestructible as phones come. Falls from great heights: check. Big kickings: check. It’s even totally waterproof so he won’t even be able to drown it in his beer.

Now, not everyone suffers from this kind of rage against the machine (lucky, really, or walking underneath parties around new years would be very dangerous indeed) but we think there’s probably a fair number of you who work somewhere dangerous / dusty / rainy, or who just find themselves and their belongings a little more accident prone than most of us. If so, the Nokia 3720 is most definitely for you. And, being a Nokia, it’s also a more than decent phone in its own right, with a 2.2” screen, Nokia Maps, a torch and a bunch of other cool things that this Nokia 3720 classic review, or the official page will tell you if you just click here.

The Vodafone-exclusive 6730 Classic will be hitting the streets any day now and we have to say we’re a little impressed. Not a lot impressed, but enough a little to tell you a bit about it. Most notable at all is how light the thing is. At a couple of grams over 80g, this is just about the lightest 3G phone out there. If Nokia had their way, they’d say it’s the lightest smartphone out there, but we don’t think this is quite smart enough to be called a smartphone. Yes, it’s an S60 phone, yes, it has GPS, yes, it has 3G…. but for us, smartphone stands for something a little smarter than this little Nokia 6730 Classic offer.

Anyway, there’s more than enough to keep you happy as long as you’re not expecting an all-singing, all-dancing smartphone. The Ovi Maps function is really pretty neat, and with a free lifetime membership to their pedestrian navigator, you can access turn-by-turn instructions whether you’re walking in Manchester, Cairo, Sydney or New York. There’s an optional membership to the Ovi driving navigation too, but we think with a screen this small you’d not only find it hard to use, you’d probably seriously injure someone trying. Not a good plan.

The email functionality is also very neat, offering desktop-like access to your email accounts, allowing folder sorting, html interactivity and other neat stuff you don’t normally get on a phone this size.

Add to that a semi-decent camera, neat media playing functions and all that typical Nokia design-craft and the Nokia 6730 Classic might just be the phone for you. Check out a Nokia 6730 review here for even more details, or have a look at the video below

It really is funny how time flies. It feels like only a couple of few ago that a list of features such as the one below for the Nokia 2730 Classic would attract ooohhs and aahhhs from people and would most likely be attached to the most expensive of high-end fancy phones:

  1. 3G
  2. dual-band UMTS and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  3. 2 megapixel camera
  4. Bluetooth 2.0 +ED (stereo)
  5. USB 2.0
  6. Flash Lite 3.0
  7. MIDP Java 2.1 with apps included
  8. Multimedia player
  9. FM radio
  10. 3.5mm audio socket
  11. 1GB memory card and stereo wired headset
  12. Nokia maps pre-installed
  13. 17 days standby
  14. 88 grams

Wait… it was only a few years ago! But then that’s how the technology world moves, we guess. So we’re not excited about this because of exactly what it’s offering – there’s nothing new or particularly special about any of its features. But what is special is that all this is being offered on the Nokia 2730 Classic at an obscenely low price. Quoted from Nokia as being launched at a paltry 80 Euros before taxes and other subidies, we’re racking our brain to think of the last time a bargain this delicious came our way.

Because – look at it – it’s also a bit of a looker this phone. So we reckon this might just be one of those phones that, seemingly from nowhere, every other person you know will have one. It certainly won’t please those flash friends of your who always want the latest and best, but the Nokia 2730 Classic going to make a hell of people very happy indeed. Check out this Nokia 2730 classic review for some more stats and so on.

This dual slide phone which was announced about in somewhere around the 3rd quarter of 2008, is the only non-N Series Nokia to be made with the dual slide factor. Ideally this is meant for the Chinese market however with the possibility of being introduced to other markets globally as well. In terms of appearance it’s quite similar to the N96. However it supports CDMA networks as well, which was not the case in N96.

Looking very concise and organized it is surely an easy phone to use. It’s a little thick at 16mm and weighs 126g. One sliding will give you access to the number pad while slided the other way, you can see the dedicated keys for the music player. This phone gives you a pretty good music experience with 20hrs continuous playback and a 3.5mm jack so that you can connect your favorite headphone set to it.

Apart from the awesome music player, it has the following other features:
• 2.2 inches 16m color QVGA screen
• 3megapixel camera
• 150MB built in memory and microSD slot for increments up to 8GB
• 4hrs call time and 11 days talk time
• 2.0 Bluetooth
• In built GPS
• Series 40 user interface
• Speaker-Independent Name Dialing for hands free

You can refer to this information & learn more and see Press images if you brows through Nokia’s official page. The Nokia 8280 is expected to officially release to the markets in the 1st quarter of 2009.

The end of January is nearly upon us and that means that we are close to seeing the launch of the Nokia 5800 on Orange, some sites have already started offering the 5800 on pre-order, but we recommend waiting for another week or so and seeing the full range of Nokia 5800 deals that there are to offer. As with all new mobile phones, the earlier that you get the mobile phone the more you can expect to pay. There will be a multitude of different Nokia 5800 contract deals available, although for the time being these will be limited to Orange. If you are still unsure about getting the 5800 (Nokia’s first touch screen mobile phone), you can check out a pretty comprehensive Nokia 5800 review at the preceding link.
